Stairs are often some of the most used areas of our home and can be magnets for crud and dirt. Because stairs are being used continually, they are also more vulnerable to wear and tear than other spots in the home. Carpet tends to not withstand these conditions as well as hardwood does and many homeowners have been deciding to make the transition. We do several staircase renovations around the Atlanta Ga area and want to keep our clients and readers informed on their staircase options.

There are two options for the homeowner when upgrading their stairs. The first, and often more popular, option is to remove all of the carpeting fabric from the stairs and leave only the wood structure. Metro Atl. Floors would then sand and refinish the wood planks to meet the client’s desired look and color. This option has been trendy among Atlantans because the homeowner does not have to restart from scratch. Metro is able to salvage the structure of the stairs and create a look that appears to be a complete reinstallation. To get a better idea of what this would look like we have provided some before and after images below.

The second option would be to install new hardwood planks and replace your stair tread. We understand that not everyone is as familiar with the wood flooring vocabulary as we are and have provided a diagram below that demonstrates what staircase tread is. Basically the stair tread is the portion of the staircase that you place your foot on.

At Metro Atl. Floors we typically like to use solid oak for tread, but will do whatever best suits the client. Once a wood has been selected, then a Metro Atl. professional will stain to wood to match the look of the rest of the home.
